The exams
Two tests stand between you and an English-taught degree in Italy: IMAT for medicine, CEnT-S for engineering, economics, pharmacy and the sciences. We prepare you for both, with the official syllabus, the real clock and the real marking.
State universities · one national test · in English
One sitting a year, a paper answer sheet, one national ranking for every public English-taught medical school. Five options per question, one correct.
CISIA · computer-based · five sittings a year · in English
New since November 2025, replacing the English TOLC-I, TOLC-E and TOLC-F. One test for every English-taught scientific degree, six sections each on its own clock.
Formats as published for the most recent sitting, last checked on 16 October 2026 against the ministry's 2026/27 calendar, the IMAT decree of 6 August 2026 and CISIA. Both providers change details between years, so we re-check each exam against the official announcement and flag changes to you.
The platform
Not a question dump. A rehearsal of the exact day, repeated until the day itself feels familiar.
Same count, same clock, same negative marking. IMAT prints to a paper answer sheet.
Every question with a worked solution, the trap it sets and the fastest route.
Your mock score as a projected rank against past cut-offs, university by university.
Learns your accuracy per topic and tells you when a blank beats a guess.
Pre-enrolment, ISEE fees, scholarships and visa, step by step in English.
Counts back from exam day, weights sections by marks, rebuilds when life happens.
The score lab
Move the sliders and watch what a guess really costs on IMAT. Then see why eliminating a single option flips the odds.
Five options. A right answer earns 1.5, a wrong one costs 0.4. Expected points per guessed question, by how many options you can rule out:
Pure guessing is a wash at best. Eliminate one option and guessing already beats a blank. Over sixty questions that is the difference between two universities.
Where it takes you
A selection of the universities whose English-taught degrees you can target through IMAT and CEnT-S. Each programme's call says which test, and which sections, it counts.
Public universities charge by family income through the ISEE. Expect anywhere from a few hundred euros to around €4,000 a year, and regional DSU scholarships can cover fees, housing and meals. Private universities are a different league of pricing.
IMAT places are allocated separately for EU and non-EU applicants, each with its own ranking. In 2026 the EU pool at state universities grew to about 1,200 seats from about 950. Non-EU candidates pre-enrol on Universitaly and lock their university list before the exam. We model both pools.
The roadmap
An IMAT cycle in six moves, with the 2026 dates as the template. CEnT-S runs earlier and more often, and the planner adjusts for that.
Compare universities, seats, past cut-offs and language rules. CEnT-S already has sittings in its first two periods (scores by 29 January and 31 March), so an early score can shape your shortlist.
Non-EU applicants pick a university, upload documents and start the visa file. Deadlines are strict and unforgiving.
CEnT-S has two more periods (scores by 31 May and 30 July), and IMAT registration opens on Universitaly in late August for about two weeks.
IMAT at the end of the month (29 September in 2026): 100 minutes, a paper answer sheet, a pen. CEnT-S candidates get a last period with scores by 17 September.
Anonymous scores about ten days after the test, the named national ranking four weeks after, then reassignment rounds for weeks. Confirm your seat on time or it is gone.
Enrolment, codice fiscale, residence permit, a flat, and your first espresso as a matricola.
Questions
The things every international applicant asks in the first week. Answered without the bureaucracy.
For Italian-taught courses, yes. Since 2025/26 they use a filter semester: open enrolment, three national exams in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, then a ranking. English-taught Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary are excluded by the reform decree and keep IMAT. The 2026 sitting ran on 29 September with the usual format, and the named ranking follows in late October.
12,340 questions, every one with a worked solution. 5,180 for IMAT across Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths, Logic and Reading, and 7,160 for CEnT-S across Maths, Texts and data, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each question is tagged to the official syllabus and the banks are updated after every sitting.
The Italian versions still exist, for degrees taught in Italian. The English versions were retired in November 2025 and replaced by CEnT-S, one 65-question CISIA test for engineering, economics, pharmacy and the sciences. If a guide still tells you to book English TOLC-I, it is out of date.
Yes. Every question, explanation, guide and mock is written in English, for exams that are sat in English. We do not translate Italian material. We write for English-taught programmes from the start.
Not to apply or to sit IMAT or CEnT-S. Most English-taught medicine programmes expect B2 Italian by the clinical years, because patients speak Italian. Engineering and economics programmes vary. We flag the requirement for each university.
IMAT if you want Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary taught in English at a state university: one national test in late September, one ranking. CEnT-S if you want English-taught engineering, economics, pharmacy or sciences at a university in the CISIA network: a computer-based test you can sit up to five times a year. Private medical schools and a few universities such as Bocconi run their own tests, which we do not cover.
After IMAT a national ranking lists every candidate by score, separately for EU and non-EU seats. You are assigned to the highest university on your preference list where your score fits. Seats that are not confirmed are reassigned in later rounds, the scorrimenti, which run for weeks.
Strong IMAT candidates usually give it six to nine months. CEnT-S runs in five periods a year, one attempt per period, so you can start with an early sitting and repeat if the first score disappoints.
With 30% off, the IMAT question bank (5,180 questions) is €130 instead of €178, the CEnT-S bank (7,160 questions) €100 instead of €138, and both together, all 12,340, €180 instead of €258.
